How to delete an app in Google Play Console: requirements, steps, 7-day restore, and package names

To delete an app in Play Console, you have to unpublish it and meet conditions such as having fewer than 1,000 active devices. Based on Google's Help Center documentation, we cover where the delete option is and what to enter, how to restore it within 7 days, whether you can reuse the package name afterward, and how to clean up apps and releases in testing.

1. Conditions for deleting an app

You can delete an app yourself only when it meets every condition in the Play Console Help Center. If even one is missing, the delete option won't appear.

  • The app is unpublished and has no changes in review.
  • It's installed on fewer than 1,000 active devices. An active device is one that has been turned on at least once in the last 30 days.
  • It isn't rejected, suspended, or blocked.
  • An account admin deletes it and knows the transaction ID from when the developer account was created.
  • Monetized apps — those with paid downloads, in-app purchases, or subscriptions — can only be deleted by you if they have zero lifetime installs. If they have install history, contact support.

2. How to delete it

  1. In Play Console, go to Test and release → Advanced settings (or Setup → Advanced settings).
  2. On the App availability tab, check that the app is unpublished. If it meets the conditions, a Delete app section appears on the same tab.
  3. Click Delete app, then confirm by entering the app's package name and the developer account creation transaction ID.
The transaction ID is in the payment record for your developer account registration fee. Google's documentation says to leave out the leading numbers when you enter it (for example, the numbers before ‘0.G.’, ‘token’, or ‘Registration’). We cover the registration fee in Creating a developer account.

3. What happens after you delete it

  • The app disappears from Google Play, and you can no longer see its user data and metrics.
  • You can restore it within 7 days; after that, it's permanently deleted.
  • A deleted app can't be transferred to another account.
  • Package name — if the app had zero lifetime installs, the name is released and anyone can use it again. If it was ever installed, no app can reuse it, including in the same account.

Installs by testers during closed testing can count toward install history. You may not be able to start over with the same package name after deleting, so if you plan to keep using that package name, it's safer to leave the app as it is rather than deleting it.

4. If you only want to clean up a test app or release

  • You want to end a testing track — you can't delete tracks; pause it instead (Can you delete a testing track?).
  • You want to delete a release you uploaded by mistake — you can only delete the latest release on a track (including draft releases and recently rejected releases). Replace a release that's already published with a fixed one that has a higher version code.
  • You only want to change the app name or icon — no need to delete the app; edit your store listing.

Frequently asked questions

I don't see a Delete app button.
The Delete app section only appears on the App availability tab once every condition is met. Check that the app is unpublished, that there are no changes in review, that it has fewer than 1,000 active devices, that it isn't rejected, suspended, or blocked, and that you're signed in as an account admin.
Can I create a new app with the same package name after deleting?
The package name is released only for apps with zero lifetime installs. If the app was ever installed, that package name can't be reused by any app, including in the same developer account. Keep in mind that installs by testers during closed testing can count toward install history.
I deleted my app by mistake. Can I undo it?
According to Google's documentation, you can restore it within 7 days of deletion; after that, it's permanently deleted.
Can I delete a paid app or one with in-app purchases?
Monetized apps can only be deleted by you if they have zero lifetime installs. If they have install history, you need to contact the Play Console support team.
Can I delete just an App Bundle I uploaded?
Google's app deletion article only covers deleting the entire app. You can only delete the latest release on a track (including draft releases and recently rejected releases), so the reliable fix for a release uploaded by mistake is to replace it with a new, corrected one.

Meet the requirement without recruiting testers

DUIRE joins your closed test with real Android devices and opens your app every day for 14 days. Registering your app and checking installability are free.
