How to write your Google Play store listing: app name length, screenshot sizes, and icon specs
Character limits for the app name (30 characters), short description, and full description in your Google Play store listing, plus specs for the app icon, feature graphic, screenshots, and preview video — all in one place, based on Google's Help Center documentation. We also cover screenshot sizes that help with recommendations and what to watch for when changing your app name.

1. Character limits
Your store listing has three text fields. Here are the lengths set out in the Play Console Help Center article.
| Field | Length |
|---|---|
| App name | 30 characters |
| Short description | 80 characters |
| Full description | 4,000 characters |
- Your app name appears as is in search results and on the home screen. A short name that tells people what the app is works best.
- The short description is the first thing people read on your store page. Say in one sentence what your app does for them.
- Don’t stuff in irrelevant keywords. Google’s documentation says using repetitive or unrelated keywords in your app name or description can get your app suspended.
2. Image specs
| Asset | Spec |
|---|---|
| App icon | 512×512px · 32-bit PNG (with alpha) · up to 1,024KB |
| Feature graphic | 1024×500px · JPEG or 24-bit PNG (no alpha) |
| Screenshots | 320–3,840px · JPEG or 24-bit PNG · long side no more than twice the short side · at least 2, up to 8 per device type |
| Preview video | One YouTube URL · public or unlisted · optional |
The specs come from Play Console Help: Add preview assets.
3. Screenshot sizes — minimum vs. recommended
Meeting the minimum (320–3,840px, at least 2) is enough to publish. But Google recommends larger screenshots if you want them to be used for recommendations and promotion.
- Apps — at least 4 screenshots of 1080px or more. Portrait at 1080×1920 (9:16), landscape at 1920×1080 (16:9) or larger.
- Games — at least 3 screenshots in 16:9 landscape (1920×1080 or larger) or 9:16 portrait (1080×1920 or larger).
- Tablets and Chromebooks — 1,080–7,680px, at least 4 recommended. 16:9 for landscape, 9:16 for portrait.
4. Preview video (optional)
- Add a single YouTube video URL. Don't use playlist or channel URLs, or parameters such as a start time.
- The video must be public or unlisted, with monetization turned off and no age restriction.
- Only the first 30 seconds autoplay, so Google recommends showing your key features within the first 10 seconds.
5. What to prepare alongside your listing
Along with your store listing, you need to complete the app setup items (privacy policy, App access, content rating, data safety, and so on) before you can run a closed test and launch. For the privacy policy, see how to add a privacy policy; for the full steps to launch, see how to publish an app on Google Play.
Frequently asked questions
- How long can my app name be?
- According to Google's documentation, up to 30 characters. The short description can be up to 80 characters and the full description up to 4,000 characters.
- What size should Play Store screenshots be?
- Minimum 320px and maximum 3,840px, and the long side can't be more than twice the short side. To be eligible for recommendations and promotion, Google recommends at least 4 screenshots of 1080px or more: 1080×1920 (9:16) for portrait and 1920×1080 (16:9) for landscape.
- How many screenshots do I need?
- You need at least 2 to publish, and you can add up to 8 per supported device type. For large screens such as tablets, at least 4 are recommended.
- Can I change my app name later?
- Yes, you can change it in your store listing. But stuffing irrelevant keywords into your app name and description can get your app suspended, so don't pad the name to target search terms.
- Where is the feature graphic (1024×500) used?
- It's used as the cover for your preview video and when your app is shown prominently in ads or app collections. Google recommends keeping key elements in the center and avoiding pure white or dark gray backgrounds.
